about
Single number 11 in the 'song a month' releases for Michael S. Ryan is "Mr. Universe" - a fingerpicking-folk-ballad in the vein of “The Avett Brothers”. The song details Ryan's quest for answers to the existential questions we come across as life moves along.
"Like most people, every so often I have moments of uncertainty in trying to understand what everything means. What's the purpose of all this? How do I truly fit into it all?"
After finding out that a former Mr. Universe lived two doors down from his home, Ryan became fascinated by his once famous, now elderly neighbour.
"I've never actually talked to him, but there's something fascinating about him. His yard and garden are meticulously neat and he's working on it constantly. Just looking at his world through little glimpses while walking by, you can tell he has his shit together. I thought that if anyone had the answers, it had to be Mr. Universe himself. And I thought that that was a cool premise for a song."
As with all Michael S. Ryan’s songs, his wife Kristen Herrington will be creating a coinciding painting to go along with it. The painting will be released in the coming weeks.

Mr. Universe
Sure enough it comes again, even though you tried to
Tell yourself everything you fear is in your mind
Catch a bus to Central Park, see what you can find
See all the things John Lennon did in a different time
Read every book, tried sitting down shutting off your head
Ran 10k to fix your mind but hurt your knee instead
Tell me what to do or even where I need to go
I’d trek through the Andes, fight Ivan Drago
CHORUS
Two doors down from me Mr. Universe is raking leaves
He keeps his garden neat and he got some tricks up his old sleeve
I wanna ask him what it was like in 1955 When he was by name, the greatest man alive
/
I wanna ask him what it was like when he was 23
When he was the man we all wish we could be
Tell me where we’re going to, I’ll tell you where I’ve been
I’ll do the best i can to make amends with all my sins
Make an oath between your head, your heart and your own guts
That no matter where things go it will be enough
